The best program I know for editing/making charaWADs is XWE. It's very visual, and its interface is easy to figure out. I use it. If you tried to use doombuilder to edit chara wads, then, maybe that's your problem.

Just whatever you do, don't open the original files and save, because it will corrupt the files, as you saw.

DOS Command:

COPY srb2.srb srb2.wad

Or you could just click on it, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, right click and rename it to "SRB2.WAD".
