Midi program suggestions?

I use Cakewalk Home Studio 3.01. It's not perfect, but it works pretty well. It's an ancient Windows 3.1 program. If you want something free, you can try JazzWare, but its interface doesn't seem as good. I never really learned to use it.
Another option is to use ModPlug Tracker and make MIDIs, but it doesn't do a great job of MIDI conversion. You have to hack around some of its quirks to make it work (like all the drums being one off).
