Whenever I try things like modby, spstart, in the console it says unknown word modby and whatever is typed in. Any suggestions?

Those are header params, not console commands. They aren't interchangeable.

I have a problem, whenever I click the "Edit MAINCFG lump", It gives me a runtime error; I have even reinstalled the editor.

Use SLumpEd or XWE to create the MAINCFG. The map editor for me has errored an all computers except my own (I keep it on a flash drive), but the lump editor never does.
