There are some areas in the vanilla SRB2 campaign where there's a point that the upper wall turns into a skybox wall, while the player can still walk underneath and it's not a thok barrier. Apparently, Knuckles can climb on the skybox part of those walls.
While climbing from the visible wall up to the skybox part of the wall is a bit random/fiddly, you can always cling directly onto the skybox part if you glide from above the visible part of the wall.
Even just climbing upwards from a nearby thok barrier wall until you get above the wall and automatically curl into a jump ball, then gliding onto the skybox part of the non-thok barrier wall, is enough to attach to the air and let you climb.
