Is it safe to overwrite?

When the next demo version comes out, will it be safe to unzip it (assuming it comes in a ZIP file) into the folder which holds the previous demo version, and just have it overwrite the already existing files, And keep the stuff I unlocked?
Or do I have to play the new one from scratch?
