I updated - what happened to my save data?

I updated from 2.1.20 to 2.1.23, and now my entire 1 PLAYER section is completely clear. Lost my custom configs too, and it seems to be unable to save when I play.

Did I fudge up the update or does this normally happen? I'm thinking I may have replaced some files given in the update...

The save files are literal files, and the config is config.cfg. The update process shouldn't have done anything to these.

Meanwhile, if you're not able to save, that may mean that you have the game somewhere that needs administrator permission to alter, like program files. If you moved the location of your SRB2 install for some reason, that could explain it. Maybe your save files and config are in the old location?
