As far as I know, there's no way to make (interesting) custom abilities using SOC. However, a character's thokitem can be abused with Actions that run when the object spawns to make somewhat strange abilities. Besides, it's easier to learn how to use Lua's AbilitySpecial hook than to make an entire ability with one object.
