So more recently SEGA have been deciding to take the Sonic franchise more seriously, and part of that is taking more care to have a consistent lore. They still have a lot of work to do in fixing up some inconsistencies however, and I suspect that one of these inconsistencies is a potential incompatibility between the background lore of Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Frontiers. Seeing as Unleashed has finally gotten an unofficial PC port recently and more people are starting to play it, I figure this is a pretty good opportunity to talk about it.
In Sonic Unleashed, it is explained after Chip gets his memories back that he is actually Light Gaia, and he's been battling against Dark Gaia since the very beginning of the planet's existence. He does this by gathering the seven Chaos Emeralds, placing them in the Gaia Temple alters, and forming the Gaia Colossus so that he can do battle against Dark Gaia. This happens over and over, with the two always ending up sleeping for millions of years before awakening again in an endless cycle.
In Sonic Frontiers, it is explained that the seven Chaos Emeralds were brought to Earth by a race of alien life forms called the Ancients after they were forced to flee their home world when it was destroyed by The End. The Chaos Emeralds lead them to Earth due to them being attracted to the Master Emerald. The Chaos Emeralds are stated by Sage to be native to the homeworld of the Ancients.
The apparent inconsistency is this: Chip has been using the emeralds to fight Dark Gaia on Earth since supposedly the beginning of time, but that can't be true if the emeralds originate from an alien planet and were relocated to Earth later. Any thoughts or opinions on the matter?
My speculation for how this could make sense is this: Light Gaia and Dark Gaia could have a connection to the Ancients and The End. It might have been the Ancients who built the Gaia Temples originally, and Chip (Light Gaia) was "created" by the Ancients to protect the planet in their place. His role as the pilot of the Gaia Colossus seems like a parallel to how the Ancients piloted the Titans, and the Gaia Colossus might even be a sort of "Ultimate Titan" that is even bigger and more powerful than even Supreme. Dark Gaia could be a split off fragment of The End which inherited his desire to destroy everything. Light Gaia might misremember how long it has been that he's been fighting Dark Gaia because it's just been so incredibly long and he spends so much of that time sleeping.
