How do i strafe?

ok so something i've noticed in a few servers (with cheats on but no mods) that i play is that when you press left you don't turn left but rather strafe in that direction, and when i leave and go to the single=player campaign i just turn normally, how do i make it so i can strafe? i wanna know because looking cool is like 1/3 of the fun in any sonic game.

In the controls menu, try setting your playstyle to Legacy instead of Standard - this will make your character always face forward rather in the direction of your movement. In multiplayer match, tag, etc., this is forced onto players because of the importance of knowing where your opponents are aiming.

When you "turn" left you're actually strafing, the character just faces the direction they're moving instead of where you're looking. The difference between the Legacy and Standard playstyles is purely aesthetic.
