how do i get on to the master server?

i have been trying for several days to attempt and get onto the master server to invite my friends and some others to play netgames. i've always had struggle with this, as it is agonizingly complex. is there any shorter explanation to this?

Are you trying to host a server or simply use the Server Browser to join one?
