Aseprite is paid for.
I recommend Libresprite since it is a good alternative as it's a fork of an older version of Aseprite that's also free. I think it's a little inferior, but still worth getting as it'll help you gauge whether or not you want to upgrade to Aseprite.

If you want to recolor stuff, use SLADE, which has a color remap function.
Drawing with it is a pain otherwise, but i do slight edits of sprites with it anyway-
