This is how you can edit from scratch.
First grab up three sprites. Example: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles.
Looks like this:
Now grab anything from the tails sprite or knuckles sprite. Like Tails' tails and put it on Sonic.
Example:
Even put on Knuckles' shoes for Sonic.
Example:
Now, when you finish setting everything up, color everything.
Example:

Resize the image so that it only shows one sprite, the Sonic sprite in a 70 x 70 pixeled box.
Done!
Now you have to do that for 160 sprites, which means 160 times total.
Was it 172 sprites, or 160?
