Help with colormaps

Can anybody please refer me to a tutorial on what colormaps are, and how to use them? I couldn't find much on the Wiki to help me. Thanks.

The wiki is your friend.

Contains example colormap values, as well as examples of colormap use within vanilla SRB2's levels.

And also includes an example wad.
