Hardest Video Game you've ever completed

This tittle is self explanatory, you name some games that you've owned and completed that costed you the most amount of trouble. Whatever for it's sheer difficulty or horrendous controls or whatever. I'll start first:

Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn (My most hated Kirby game)... on Devilish mode!

So the 3ds port of Kirby's Epic Yarn had this new mode called "Devilish mode" where you start with 5 hitpoints and have to make it to the end of the level while avoiding one of the 3 types of devils. If you complete a level under Devilish mode on full heath, you can earn special prizes for Kirby's room, like a portal window, ability rack, a slot machine, and some other cool stuff. So if want all of the cool prizes, you'll have to beat every level on Devilish mode. I've earned all of the prizes by completing those levels under that-before-said mode, and let me tell you It's harder than it sounds. The levels arranges between very hard and near impossible, not to mention they're also long, so it becomes a gauntlet than a adventure. Sure you have a full-heath refill when half way towards the level (except for the first 6 boss levels), and the devils go away under transformations (except for the extra bonus levels), but still very hard.

The worst offenders in this game has to go to:
  • Different Kirby Gameplay (No inhale, No float, but you do get Copy Abilities)
  • the 3rd type of the devil that has a tail (can't remember this dude's name, she's very annoying)
  • Lava Landing (That freaking lava level that I hated the most out of the Kirby series, plus the scary difficulty spike, AND the 3rd Devil going after you)
  • Coca Station (Only using this slow train + lag and the level design = screw this level)
  • Treat Land's boss (can't remember the name, but it's purely RNG)
  • one of Snow Land's Bonus Levels (also can't remember the name, but it's entirety based of that one transformation used in Pyramid Sands)
  • Meta Knight's fight (I. HATE. THAT. FIGHT. I don't even know how to kill him without the help of Copy Abilities! The reason why I beat him is by spamming the noyon ability)
  • Bubbly Clouds (Kracko can die in a fire for what I care)
  • and possibly the Halberd stage (Bullet hell, in my Kirby game? More likely than you think)
Let's hear it, people!

I don't complete games too often, but Sonic Frontiers Final Horizon on a handheld switch (as in un-docked) was pretty hard. Though I think it was on easy.

Many also remember Dark Souls or Cuphead — these games are just made to test patience. And it's funny that sometimes even "children's" titles can be tougher than hardcore projects — your example with Kirby shows this perfectly. In such moments, you really feel that the victory is worth all the effort, and the thrill of completing it is many times greater. It's like gambling: you know that the odds are not always on your side, but the desire to get to the end makes you try again and again. I recently came across this guide, and it also emphasizes that it is not only the result or bonuses that are more important, but also the process itself, adrenaline and excitement. I think that's why we love sharing stories about the "hardest" games — it's like a reward for perseverance and a memory of being able to defeat what seemed impossible.

For example, Ninja Gaiden on Xbox turned out to be the most difficult for me, because every mistake cost me my life, and the bosses required perfect reactions.

Probably Rain World.
The game is incredible, having lots of details and interactions that you have to find out just to survive.
It's such an amazing digital ecosystem, with predator and prey having each their place on the food chain.
I say this also after getting eaten for the fifth time in a row by a white lizard on the Wall.

SRB2 100%, all emblems/black hole zone
There's stages of diffuculty to getting all of it. First is beating the game (obviously) and getting all the emblems there. It's not very hard, but most of the game's emblems are there, so it's probably gonna take a while. Some emblems aren't very easy to find either, and require you know the levels almost by heart to recognize what the hints are talking about. Time requirements are basically nothing now, but rings can be a little tricky, taking a lot longer.
The next is the challenge stages. They're essentially the same type of thing as the original levels, but the emblems require some MUCH more specific steps, like carrying an armageddon shield all the way from the beginning of the level to the end, finding a hidden spin-gap to take an obscure alternate path, badnik bouncing, pressing buttons from all over the level, and that one fuckass emblem that i still couldnt find after using objectplace to find it like 3 times and a trail of rings leading up to it.
Then, there's nights. You don't need to be remotely good at nights to get the emeralds normally, so when your skills are suddenly put to the extreme in order to do 100%, it makes ya wanna go insane. That one christmas level got me so many times trying to get a good score that I can probably assume that's why it's not the 5th special stage anymore. Then there's Black Hole, the last challenge the game throws at you (unless you're stupidly good at nights and do this stuff first, nothing's stopping you and it's completely seperate from the rest of the game besides emblem count) Hard enough to beat it, harder to get the emblems for it.

Crash 1 NST version. I say the NST version specifically, since the changes in jumping and collision box really messed up a lot of muscle memory. The other 2 games, despite similar problems, weren't too bad all things considered. I did have to look up a guide for Crash 2's many secrets, but was otherwise fine. I even beat Stormy Accent with all boxes gem. Can't remember if I ever attempted the relic for that stage though.

Worth mentioning, I also went for the Plat relics in those games too. Got most of them from Crash 1 and 2, and all in Crash 3 (Plus the future tense bonus stage). I didn't do all the plat relics in the other two since I'm on the switch version, where achievements don't exist, so I saw it as kinda pointless.
