im trying to hell, yaknow. Im just giving you a worthy suggestion. Paint is a gradient tool. Its, in fact, the only one I use for making sprites and stuff.

An anyway, spazzo's right, use paint, its the best way to get the desired effects, and gradients aren't hard to do with it, just takes a while, I never used to, but i have a new mouse now, w00t ^_~.
