You're probably using a map number that doesn't already have a sky for that slot, and you've probably not set what sky you want your level to have in the level header either.
I think I know what your problem is. You probably selected a SKYNUM that wasn't valid. Only a few values for SKYNUM actually produce skies. Select a different value, and the sky becomes red. I get the feeling that this error wasnt from Skynum or anything, at least answer this question, did you use F_SKY1 on a wall? because it only works on floors and ceilings.
