Easier Model Switching?

The SRB2 Community has cooked up some pretty awesome models. It's been a little while since I've played srb2 and I would like to try them out. However having to manually replace models is abit annoying and very restrictive. What if I want to switch back the jack jims original models? I know I can make up a backup of the original but that's very storage consuming. A feature for easily switching between models would be very useful. Either by the community or by sonic team junior themselves. I know SRB2's engine has limitations so this might not be possible. Maybe a batch file could made? A batch file could be used to automate the replacing process (or for renaming files in the case of certain model packs)

I just leave all of my models inside the models folder, then edit the models.dat, leaving something before that specific line so the game doesn't read it. For example:

=SONIC PEPPERMODELS/SONIC.md3 2.4 0.0
=TAILS PEPPERMODELS/TAILS.md3 2.5 0.0
=KNUCKLES PEPPERMODELS/KNUCKLES.md3 2.5 0.0
=AMY PEPPERMODELS/AMY.md3 2.4 0.0
=ROSY PEPPERMODELS/AMY.md3 2.4 0.0
=PLAYERFANG PEPPERMODELS/FANG.md3 2.4 0.0
=FANG PEPPERMODELS/FANG.md3 2.4 0.0
=PLAYERFANG PEPPERMODELS/BONUS/FANG.md3 2.4 0.0
=FANG PEPPERMODELS/BONUS/FANG.md3 2.4 0.0
=PLAYERFANG CHERRI2/FANG.md3 3.0 0.0
=FANG CHERRI2/FANG.md3 3.0 0.0
AMY CHERRI2/AMY.md3 3.0 0.0
ROSY CHERRI2/AMY.md3 3.0 0.0
METALSONIC CHERRI2/METAL.md3 3.0 0.0
KNUCKLES CHERRI2/KNUCKLES.md3 3.0 0.0
SONIC CHERRI2/SONIC.md3 3.0 0.0
TAILS CHERRI2/TAILS.md3 3.0 0.0
=SONIC PLAY/SONIC.md3 3.0 0.0
=MCSONIC PLAY/SONIC.md3 3.0 0.0
=TAILS PLAY/TAILS.md3 3.0 0.0
=BLUESHOESTAILS PLAY/TAILS.md3 3.0 0.0
=KNUCKLES PLAY/KNUCKLES.md3 3.0 0.0
=AMY PLAY/AMY.md3 3.0 0.0
=ROSY PLAY/AMY.md3 3.0 0.0
=METALSONIC PLAY/METAL_SONIC.md3 3.0 0.0
PLAYERFANG PLAY/FANG.md3 3.0 0.0
FANG PLAY/FANG.md3 3.0 0.0

Here, for example, I'm using the player models from the newly released Cherri's Watanabe Styled model pack. For that, I am neutralizing the Peppermodels and Jeck Jims - except for Fang. I'm using Fang from Jeck Jims'.

I have to agree. I have pepperminted models but i dont know how to activate them.
Maybe it's my fault?

Make sure the models.dat file is updated to match those files. You may find a txt or a substitute models.dat file in the download of Pepperminted models

When updating the models.dat, it should look like "[skin name] [.md3 file path] [a bunch of numbers]" just like in my post above

I think you guys are missing the point of the thread. This isn't asking how to install the models but rather asking if it's possible to make it less tedious. As Switching out models isn't as simple as say turning an add-on on and off

I don;t think so.

The ironic part is that, even tho its simpler, turning addons on and off is still not simple - you have to close the game

I think you guys are missing the point of the thread. This isn't asking how to install the models…

I was actually answering the guy above me, cuz i hadnt thought of anything to answer you. I thought a good idea the devs should take inspiration from, so here it goes: a menu inside Open GL options that allows you to switch between every single model inside the game - smth like this:

Pause Menu > options > video > opengl > and the “models” option, instead of being a toggle, it’d be another menu:

MODELS < on >

Sonic < Watanabe >
Tails < Peppermint >
Knuckles < Jeck Jims >
Monitor < Dano’s >
GFZ Tree < None >
B. Crawla < Jeck Jims >
R. Crawla < Motobug >
Ring < FZN >

That and addon unloading in-game would be perfect for 2.2.14

…but rather asking if it's possible to make it less tedious.

Is it possible to make it less tedious? Currently, nope. If we were to answer directly, the answer would be “no”.

But my first message in the thread is the only thing I thought of that can help - for now. Setting up the perfect models.dat for your needs is difficult, but then actually changing it is easy. The work has been a lot less of a burden since I’ve done that.

And mixing model packs is great because you may not like all of the models a pack offers.

I know how to install the models. Spoiler: VERY EASY!
  1. Grab any model you have and place it into the respective folder, and delete the old models.
  2. Load SRB2.
  3. Switch to OpenGL if you're on Software/DOOM LEGACY mode.
  4. Enable Models in the OpenGL menu.
  5. Load a file. Preferably the file that doesn't save.
  6. If the models are still by Jeck Jim, you didn't read step one. :knuxsmug:
  7. Play the game if you have the correct models.

Exactly. Thats the easy way.
But I shared my method for various different packs above because I dont wanna lose previous packs
