Dwarf Fortress is a Rougelike/Fortress simulator depending on if you play one of two modes called Adventure, and Dwarf Fortress. The game, like most rougelikes uses ASCII along with some custom symbols to show a extremely detailed game environment. The main game is Dwarf Fortress in which you attempt to build up a fortress and keep it standing against the tides of danger which include more then these listed, fish, goblin/human/elven invaders, randomized megamonsters that can have breath attacks that melt your dwarves on touch, and the possibility of a tantrum spiral in your fort that ends up turning your dwarves into a mess of insane/melancholic/berserk maniacs. Remember. Losing is FUN!
The second game mode entails an adventurer setting out in the world with naught but a weapon, some clothing and food and water on a adventurer through out the randomly generated world you create and can customize with whatever settings.
Despite how good the game is, it suffers from a very big problem. The user interface is EXTREMELY hard to get used to and it is recommended you view this quickfort starting guide to find out how to play. http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Quickstart_guide
Another recommendation is to download a utility program called Dwarf Therapist which I assume you can find a download of yourself. The game also has multiple mods for people who want added content and graphic packs for people who can't read ASCII which can be found here http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Graphics_set_repository#Phoebus.27_Graphics_Pack . I recommend people try the Mayday pack.
Well, happy digging! Remember the motto of Dwarf Fortress. Losing is FUN. You are sure tolose have fun a lot!
