Ubuntu also has a Wubi-based installer, so you don't have to modify partitions.
Try booting the CD first, for first impressions. Don't install it if you can't confirm that your hardware works great with it.
(I take it someone on the internet is trying to evangelize you into ubuntu. I say use what you feel most comfortable with, and what works best for you. I use Ubuntu myself, but I wouldn't want to recommend it to every human in the known universe for the sake of it, and I don't find it as comfortable as Windows either. (monitor configs, mouse movements, wine issues, no ntfs steam etc))
