Can you still play netgames even without the Master Server?

That's what the Join By IP option would be for. Believe it or not, we used to set up netgames like that. The host would generally have his IP in his name and people would join through IP.

The master server was added when we released 1.09. Before that, all netgames were set up with IP addresses.

I know someone who does...she has 10 of her friends' IP-Addresses memorized.
