Yes, this is indeed possible. He is using the fact that all the buttons stay down after you die in a level mystic realm. I thought it was actually a well known exploit, since its not to hard to figure out if you think things through. Last time I time attacked I got like 20 something seconds because of this exploit.

Using death as shortcut is used in a lot of games.
Heck, you can do it EVEN IN SUPER METROID. (Ok, only in TASes =P)
