Tails arrived, and told him that there were robots attacking the Forest Zone. Before Tails could finish, Sonic was already a tiny dot on the horizon. The robots were simple Crawla robots, destroyed with minimal effort. Sonic looked up at the sky and to his horror, saw an enormous battleship, with its guns pointing at the Greenflower City. He had been tricked into a diversion! Without wasting time, Sonic rushed up to the Doomship, even though there was nothing he could really do.

That's on the Story page on srb2.org, but this so-called "diversion" does not appear in the in-game intro.

Also, this is really minor, but the Manual still says it's been 8 years. I think it's around 10 or 11 now.

If that part of the story was a bit changed, it'd be great for the cut scene before you enter Doomship Zone.

...except Greenflower City gets destroyed before you even start GFZ.

And I don't think they're going to add any more cutscenes other than the intro, except maybe an ending.

Don't question video game logic. :)

Greenflower City gets destroyed, but then you run through Greenflower Zone. It is a very happy place with the sun beaming down, and no trace of dead people/destroyed city and you see no rubble anywhere.
So yeah, the introduction's just there to provide some (contradictory) backstory. It has no real relevance to the game!

You wanna know why GFZ doesn't have any green flowers? Because they're all dead.

Therefore, there is a trace of destruction.

So? Emerald hill zone doesn't have any hills made out of emerald. :D

....Uh, yes it does.

Greenflower zone never looks like it was city, or even ruins, which I found strange. But that's easy to overlook.

O_o

Anyways... If GreenFlower city got destroyed, how come Red X's house is still there? Does his house have like super anti missile protection?

Well it IS a game.

You guys are attempting to apply logic to something we don't even bother to apply logic to. Greenflower City is destroyed in the opening cutscene. Why? Who cares?

The name "Emerald Hill" does not imply the hill is made out of emeralds. It's called what it is most likely due to the fact that both acts have seven checkpoints in total, meaning you can potentially collect all seven chaos emeralds before completing the zone. One could also argue that the word is used as a color, not an object, in which case the name also makes sense.

"Greenflower" was chosen simply because it sounds fitting at a glance, so the same logic doesn't apply to it.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it just means that it consists mostly of emerald colored grass. You'll notice that even though the cliffs you're hopping across are orange, the background is full of rolling green hills. In other words, its just fancier way to say "Green" Hill Zone.

I like to think that Emerald Hill and Green Hill are both the exact same place, and that because it was the place where Sonic first faced Dr. Robotnik has some kind of historical significance as well as some kind of connection to an emerald... but that kind of logic doesn't usually apply to the games.

Marble Garden Zone was named for the greenery with stone walls...

Mystic Cave Zone was so named because it was underground...

Sky Sanctuary Zone was so named because it takes place entirely in the sky...

Techno Hill Zone was named because of being a generic technological level...

More often than not, the name has no more significance than describing what the level looks like. As long as it serves that purpose, it doesn't matter what other relevance it may have to any kind of backstory or locations.
Same goes for Greenflower Zone. It's a generic grass level, and STjr never bothered trying to make sense of how it correlates to the "Greenflower City" in the cutscene because it doesn't really need to... Not that it wouldn't be amusing to try to make sense of it, as I get tons of enjoyment out of similarly useless elaborations of the other Sonic games, but it should not be something to worry about for the quality of the game.

Well, I always thought that Eggman detroyed GreenFlower City to intimidate Sonic which didn't work and then they go to GreenFlower Zone where Eggman was heading to find a Chaos Emerald. Why would he blow up the place with a Chaos Emerald? RedXVI is most probably there because he lives outside of GFC. there, make sense?

Sonic 1 took place on South Island, whereas Sonic 2 took place on West Side Island. So they are technically different places, they're just very much the same theme.
