Personally, my idea to separate him would be to give him properties that are... specially janky to match the old era. One thing you could do is make his roll decelerate faster perhaps, based on how in the standalone version of Sonic 3, his roll attack slowed down extra fast due to a bug in the code.

I don't exactly think so, I think the double jump side of the Power Spin has some horizontal influence, so maybe that part could be the "Thok" of 2.3? It seems a lot less strong, but maybe that's good for the beginners.
