    I've confirmed that whenever I've caught at least one emerald, if I exit the save, then re-enter it, I no longer have the emerald. But maybe we don't need the 7 emeralds to 100% the game? Maybe their only purpose is to give us a reward, which indeed stays even if we lose them?
