I just watched it last night and I have never heard a theater cheer and laugh so much, and not just at the meme moments that are only funny because of some cultural ouroboros. Some jokes actually landed pretty well, you cannot tell me that them calling The Orb, The Orb, when it's clearly a cube isn't the best gag they could have possibly done for a Minecraft movie, and "Come closer" "You're not going to stab me with a knife are you?" "Noooooo" *attempts to stab with knife* *knife deflected* (Repeat) was awesome, I saw it coming a mile away and it was still hilarious, unlike hearing the word "unalive" in a movie.
The story definitely felt like it was setting up for one thing, and then it goes another way, way too often but it was a good time all around, the worst part was how quickly they forced the transition to the final battle. However, if you've never played Minecraft, the movie would make even less sense. Nostalgia pandering? You betcha, I have NEVER been hit with as much of it watching a movie as I have from this one, I guess that means I'm getting old.
Honestly, I started tearing up a little when Steve started singing goodbye to Dennis, and I felt betrayed when Steve immediately also went to the real world, like, you just had a heartfelt goodbye, why ruin it, they should have done what Super Mario Bros. (1993) did and had Steve show up at in the end credits scene saying "I need your help", or something like that.
Jared Hess has a interesting style of humor that, depending on the person, either makes it the most hilarious movie of all time or the dumbest movie of all time, with no in-between. For example, Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite are in my top 50 movies, but I have met people who say Napoleon Dynamite is the worst movie of all time.
So yeah, good movie? Maybe?
EDIT: I still can't get Lava Chicken out of my head.
