OpenGL vs Software.

OpenGL looks bland and lifeless???? Idk what you mean. The colors look fine for both OpenGL and Software.
software's colors pop out more because of the game's palette of 256 colors (so the game has to get creative with the colors it uses), opengl has infinite colors, and while that might seem like a good thing (i mean, some do prefer that), it means opengl's colors will come out more muted and less vibrant, specially with shaders off.
And I never had issues with OpenGL's FPS, unless theres a stage that contains so many things then the FPS would drop. What device on you playing SRB2 on?

eh i guess its just a device-to-device thing, i use a samsung galaxy a13

That's a very easy fix. Getting it to look 1 to 1 the same as Software isn't doable right now as far as I'm aware (though there are some mods that make an attempt IIRC), however you can enhance the OGL visuals to closer to your personal tastes by using a program such as Reshade. Regarding the colors looking less vibrant, you could simply bump up the saturation and/or contrast a bit to get it looking more how you want it.

or use tsourdt3, it have an option to enable software shading in opengl

Honsetly, OpenGL is better then Software mainly because some the sprites doesn't constantly flicker for no reason and the camera is actually good

OpenGL runs better, more optimized for any computer with even a slightly modern GPU, has perspective correction and 3D models, and has the better lighting/colors (especially when underwater or in dark maps. Software looks so bad in deep sea zone)

OpenGL is the superior way to play SRB2 and the only reason I'd ever consider switching to software is because there's like 2 maps where the map creator insists apon its use because of one or two effects that don't look right on OpenGL yet. Srb2 would be better off if software mode was deprecated entirely so the community could stop being so split on it.

As of 2025, OpenGL is still missing some notable things though it has improved.

- Proper horizon rendering with FoF support, in fact there's been a report of OpenGL regressing significantly in this area.
- Proper fog rendering that can work against the sky
- Portals (both wall and sector), Lactozilla has code for this, but never committed it.
- No-clip sprite rendering when appropriate (the Gitlab currently has a pull request for this with unknown status).
- Midtextures and FoF's rendering above and below ceilings and floors with the sky texture
- Robust sky handling (fully supporting sloped sectors and FoF planes).

2.2x has about reached the end of its life, reportedly the plan is to switch the render engine to the one Ring Racers uses (which behaves like Software, but it is reportedly OpenGL based).
