In the wake of the archived releases section on the website there is one outlier, SRB2 Christmas version 0.90, a version marked as *Missing!*, so I'm starting a hunt for it, if you have any info about this version or any files for this version, post them. I'll also get some experts, hopefully, to check if they are SRB2 Christmas version 0.90 files.

I have now gotten in contact with SSNTails about the matter, in a respectful and kind way, hopefully I get something back.

Well, hopefully we can find it, maybe, just maybe, we'll find the right person who was there at the right place at the right time.

Christmas 0.90 was really buggy and Sonikku intentionally trashed it so they could patch it to 0.92. The end of level pictures from 0.92 are probably from 0.90:

Egg Arena uses Halloween's level complete screen. Also, 0.92 is the last version with the Doom HUD, and the March 2000 build SSNTails is decompiling is similar to it.

and thus, im filled with the feeling that maybe, somewhere we can find it. i mean its not impossible, just find the right person

So it's come to my attention that this version is actually missing. No, I do not have a copy of it, but I explicitly remember playing it quite extensively on release (nearly) 24 years ago.

Gameplay and mapwise, it should be practically identical to v0.92. I don't remember map layouts for srb2 christmas changing at all between those first 2 versions. I guess v0.91 was also never public released at all. For the longest time I assumed THAT was the missing version and v.90 was still public.

The most distinctive feature was the unlimited thokking. I really, really found that fun back then, but it was obviously overpowered as heck and had to be adjusted. If someone wanted to simulate and recreate it, all you would have to do is make Sonic continuously thok while you hold down the button (the blue thok circles repeatedly spawn outward like a line and the sfx keeps playing endlessly as long as you hold the button, maybe roughly a rate of 30 thoks a second or a thok every other frame at 60fps?). It's essentially a blend between the SA1 homing attack (which the thok later tried to be) and the later boost mechanic of Unleashed/Colors/Generations/Forces. At the time of release, SA1 had only been out for 3 months in the US, so full 3D Sonic was barely a concept at all to most gamers.

Now I wish I'd kept my files or somesuch. I had 'no' idea this version would go missing. I still have my physical CDs from the SRB2 contest a year later (one for the 2000 OST, one for v0.96), and this was a few years before I finally met SSNTails and Mystic in person during some of our early development conversations (where I would contribute some ideas and texture work during the development of final demo THZ2 and CEZ and do a lot of early netgame hosting around 2002).

Sorry for the necrobump, but I've had a yearly tradition of firing up SRB2 Christmas (and Christmas NiGHTS) for a few years now. This brought me to check in on it only to realize the missing version of SRB2 Christmas was one I had vivid memories of playing.

I can't speak to specific bugs or glitches. They were certainly there, but my mind has glossed over them and simply remembers doing unlimited boost thokking around stages while I played SA1 mp3s in the background as a replacement for the midi music. I'm sure a modder could recreate the old proto-thok if they wished.

It's probably on an abandoned hard drive or on some PC that miraculously has the files after so much time.

PD: it is very unlikely since computers connected to the internet and that will just download xmas 0.90 is too improvable if not almost zero, so unless someone appears with that version it will stay like this

it is on a hard drive somewhere. when it came out i installed it and had it on my computer and never deleted it. i don't remember any of the level layouts except Springin' Around. It was the same as the level in 0.92 but with less enemies and was shorter. sonic's sprites only used his xtreme ones, and he had an infinite thok. For some reason his falling sprite was just him flapping his arms and falling.

Maybe I think the only interesting thing about xmas 0.90 is that it will have a ton of bugs and some residual Halloween files...

I am here to say that uhh.
the march 200 prototype may have the 0.90 wad

WAIT, WHAT?! I'm dreaming, my sickness is giving me a fever dream, no way.

It's funny to think there actually only three versions missing:

Christmas 0.90 (original binary)
Demo 4.33
Demo 4.34

It's a miracle that there isn't more versions that are lost for good.
