How to make a mod?

Hello, everyone! I'm a new user here and I want to know how SBR2 modding works. What engine was the fangame made in and how do people make mods? Any modders here who could teach me? Does the process apply to all games and engines? I'll love to know! I want to learn to be inspired!

SRB2 was made in the Doom Legacy engine. What kind of mods do you want to create?

Hello, thank you for replying. I'm not looking to make mods in SRB2 specifically. I want to create mods for games, but I don't know how to. I just want to know how they work. I myself am an indie game developer. I've never heard of Doom Legacy, though. Is it free? Does one have to get access to edit a game's source code? Actually, never mind. I think I might as well try out SRB2 to see how it works. I may get inspiration for how people can make mods for my own games! Thank you for your reply!

SRB2 is almost certainly not a good template for that then. Doom Legacy is a source port of Doom (1993). SRB2, having started development in 1998, is pretty much the only notable Doom-based fangame still using Doom Legacy, as it is archaic and less efficient than other Doom source ports (like UzDoom and Zandronum). Even then, Doom itself is so different from modern games that trying to use it to learn how to mod other games will be virtually useless to you. There is no universal method to mod games though, every single game will be different.

Does one have to get access to edit a game's source code?

Unless the game is open source, you won't have the source code at all. Doom is open source, and per the terms of its license, SRB2 is legally required to be open source as well. As such, you can edit the source code for SRB2 as you please. You can find that source code here.

We typically don't edit the source code when making mods for SRB2, instead we use programs like SLADE to create custom resource files (.wad and .pk3 files) for the game to load. We maintain a wiki dedicated to SRB2, featuring a rich plethora of detailed tutorials and guides on modding it. You can find that here.
