SnocSock's Works in Progress

srb20787.png

Discover the truth, and freedom
Using the little gold coins that guide you through your dreams.
Find the colors of the rainbow
And you shall be liberated from the horrors of fabrication.

* I should mention that the first map is basically done. Short and sweet, but it's just the beginning... *

Guess what?
Chicken butt!
The first demo is finished, my friends!

Contents:
- The first map in the campaign, The Art Gallery
- Five emblems to collect (technically four, since the fifth is unobtainable for the time being)
- Two tokens to find and two Rainbow Emeralds to collect in dream-like special stages*
- A patched skin of Tails (warning: he's a bit slow, for atmospheric effect)
- Various references to myself, the inspiration for this mod, and other people
- Many edited sprites to fit the aesthetics
- A title map!
- Noclip-friendly secrets!

Much more will be available as this mod is worked on.
* When you finish the demo**, you will unlock the emblem hints for this version. The emblems in the waking stages are also hints for the emerald tokens!

This is not a full, fleshed-out release! I am not using this as a way to avoid the submissions system.
** 0.1 is not the version of the demo, "First Demo" and "v0.1" are synonymous.

(edit: SCROLL DOWN FOR THE SMALLER FILE!! i was lazy and didn't convert the mp3 files, so the other file below is much less bloated!!)

Hey! Really liked the demo! But I got a problem.
Some of the paintings are messed up, but other than that, really great for a demo! :D

Before anything else, I have more info about the painting thingy, so in the OPENGL renderer the paintings are misplaced, but they aren't in software, just so you know. You probably played the map in software and there they were normal, but of course both of these renderers are janky and sometimes bite with each other. -_-

I'm bad at reviewing stuff and I also didn't had enough sleep for me to think straight today, so expect... not much. :oh:

I'm not exactly sure what I just playing, but I sure did like what I did play, and I would like to see it developed further. :3

So first of all, this type of gameplay is pretty much my favorite type to be honest. What I have in mind is like light, no-heavy-action addons like Desert Blast where you can take stuff at your pace and explore stuff, these make me kinda calm and are just fun to play through. Something like Gmod maps. So a plus for me. :3

I also liked the visual style of this addon, mainly the dream "NiGHTS" stages. :P (A rather goofy coincidence...) And the gallery was pretty fun to just walk through, this part reminded of me of MyHouse.WAD (which somehow as a whole wikipedia page made for it, so that's interesting... •_•) and the paintings themselves are also pretty well made. :3 (And if there will be more of them, then I would love to see one portraying Swift. And heck, if there won't be no more of them then I wouldn't mind if you switched my painting for the one with Swift... :P Not saying it's bad or anything, but it just would be cool to have her there too. And I just noticed that my painting is named "WATRGRAS" which is actually pretty goofy, I like it. :P)

And I feel like the atmosphere is pretty well made, at least to me. It also looks weirdly cozy in way.

And one technical thing... Could you please try to compress the music or even the sfx audio files a bit...? :dramahog:
1740764392407.png

It may seem kinda unnecessary at first, but these files together take more than 90% of the whole file size... and it's just not the most convenient to download 50 mb pk3. For me at least, it just makes the addon bloated a bit. And honestly, all you have to do is just convert the music files from MP3 to OGG. The PK3 file size will be very thankful for that... :dramahog: (And I also will be...)

And always remember to convert MP3 files to OGG one's when you're adding music or even sfx to your addon, it makes the file size lighter without losing any of the sound quality. And you can even go above and beyond like I do and compress the OGG's, which isn't required, but ye... :P Converting the audio to OGG format is enough.

And some executors require floor touch which isn't a critical problem, but you sometimes can just jump over the triggers. Especially visible in the dark room with the "fabricated" painting. And it's also a multiple use trigger so you can just:
srb20196.gif

Not sure if it's intended, but I rather mention it just in case.

And it's more of a funny nit-picky thing, but the small thumbnail for the gallery has visible FPS counter in it. :P
1740765552020.png

Just remember to turn off any HUD elements when doing screenshots later on. (← Not sure how to make it sound in a positive tone though. :C)

So to summarize my tired babbling. I like what I see and I want to see more of it. Just remember to polish stuff up later on. :> (And try to care about the execution of ideas as your main priority before details/decorations, It may cause you to spend too much time on details than on making the stage itself, and making it fun to play at that. I'm not saying this because I'm in the literally same situation... :dramahog:)

(And I like how the change in your custom title suggests that mapping and ideas made you wide awake after being eepy all the time. :P)

1) Yes, fuck OpenGL, it ruins everything. /hj
2) I'm glad it reminded you of these! The inspiration is actually an RPGMaker game. The exploration factor was very important in making these, too, so I'm glad that shone out a bit.
3) I'm also glad you spotted the word play there. I probably won't be adding any more paintings, but I'll poooossibly consider it.
4) Shit, I was worried about that. I got lazy and kept them as MP3. I swear I usually use OGG. I'll convert them later.
5) Hhh, yes, I realized that about the triggers. There was a lot I actually wanted to fix now that I didn't get around to just yet. Trust me, I'll get around to it.
6) And yes, I noticed that. Yes, I turned off the HUD. Yes, I used objectplace. I probably should've disabled the FPS counter though, as well. I'll probably update it at some point.
7) I will make sure that polishing this is one of my top priorities. Little details are something I do enjoy doing, but I know I also need to focus on the bigger picture.
Thank you for the review! You're probably one of the best people for reviews. I'll make sure to take (at least some of) this into account.
And I'm still very tired, just...lots of ideas for so many different things.

1) Yes, fuck OpenGL, it ruins everything. /hj
I fought this battle before... And I’ll end it here, both renderers are messed up in their own way and the only way to fix is not to witch-hunt the other side, but try to make maps that so they’ll be at least semi-compatible with each other until STJR cooks up the new brand renderer some time in the future... Hopefully still in the 2.2 era... ;v;
2) I'm glad it reminded you of these! The inspiration is actually an RPGMaker game. The exploration factor was very important in making these, too, so I'm glad that shone out a bit.
Yeah, I sometimes just want to play some light exploration maps with goofy concepts, hopefully this will be one of them.
3) I'm also glad you spotted the word play there. I probably won't be adding any more paintings, but I'll poooossibly consider it.
Replace my painting then... More people need to know about her... because she cool or something. :3 Or just put the painting in one of the secret areas or something, literally anything to include her... :dramahog: (She’s my favorite OC I’ve meet there... if you haven’t noticed it yet... -3- I just realized, that doesn’t fall under rule 15... right?...)
4) Shit, I was worried about that. I got lazy and kept them as MP3. I swear I usually use OGG. I'll convert them later.
And if you’re going to ever rip any more music for your addons, then I recommend using cobalt.tools. Because this lil’ guy literally has the 50 in 1 package, makes it more convinent than juggling multiple ”youtube to...” sites. (You can even instantly compress the audio just by downloading it by lowering the audio bitrate in the settings!1!1)
5) Hhh, yes, I realized that about the triggers. There was a lot I actually wanted to fix now that I didn't get around to just yet. Trust me, I'll get around to it.
Okay, just wanted to point these out though. So you wouldn’t forget or something. :P
6) And yes, I noticed that. Yes, I turned off the HUD. Yes, I used objectplace. I probably should've disabled the FPS counter though, as well. I'll probably update it at some point.
Same as the 5th point, just a point out.
7) I will make sure that polishing this is one of my top priorities. Little details are something I do enjoy doing, but I know I also need to focus on the bigger picture.
I also love decorating and polishing my maps, but now I’ve been stuck in the same spot for a month and just yesterday I actually started making new sections... So just be aware of that... (Or I maybe just had a burnout period, maybe both honestly... -.-)
Thank you for the review! You're probably one of the best people for reviews.
I’m funnily enough NOT the best person to make reviews because I feel like everything is peak to me, even if it’s clearly bad... Just know that I have like 300 hours in S.Frontiers...

But I guess It’s good If I did well... ;v;
I'll make sure to take (at least some of) this into account.
And I'm still very tired, just...lots of ideas for so many different things.
And my brain is full of static where you can sometimes find really solid ideas, but by the time you manage to dig them out, they’re already warped beyond comprehension... :dramahog:

Quick demo hotfix
- Smaller size!
- A few edits to trigger sectors to increase immersion
That's really it, the file size being smaller was the bigger of these two things.
I also wanted to release this little fix because I don't want people having a 49.2 mb file sitting around clogging their storage space.

edit: oops forgot to revert the gamedata name

Oh yeah, almost forgot to show this. Preview of the third special stage! (And don't worry, I've made more progress past that wall you see in the back.)

Just a simple change of audio format can make a huge difference. I appreciete that. :3 (The file size optimization disease has spread to yet another individual... :3)
