This mod is just alright. While it does show promise sometimes, with the set-pieces and such, I can't in good faith hold this to same level of level design the base game has to offer. With the main sell of the pack being SRB2 but modernized, I was honestly expecting a lot more expansion on the base gimmicks. Sadly, the pack only seemed to expand on the theme of the stages, and that part was done well, the game-play is quite lacking. For one, all stages seem copy-and-pasted with their level design, with it never quite getting more complex than Green Hill. Each level had the same kind-of jumps, same holding w through straight line game-play, and the same bland use of gimmicks. Even when there was a new gimmick introduced, I.E the skateboard, it was more or less the same game-play, just with a different paint. There could've been a lot more with the concept, yet the level design didn't reflect that potential, and instead opted for straight-lines. Not to mention how majority of these stages seem straight-up lazy; using level design from the base game and not even trying to make it different. This is at its worse in Castle Eggman, where the funnest parts are, sadly, the base game's level design. Even when the mod attempted to get hard, the level design still boiled down to boosting and occasionally jumping, with way too much automation.
And on it being SRB2 but modernized, I don't really see that here? Many of the base game's gimmicks are straight up removed, or if they aren't removed, they are very rarely utilized. Examples include Techno Hill, Deep Sea, and Arid Canyon, especially Arid Canyon. Arid genuinely uses next to no gimmicks from the base stage, where there could've been giant mine-carts or something. Even when it tried to expand, I saw lost potential, as the train section was still a straight-line, and there wasn't much action. In place of jumping from train to train, avoiding bullets, was another boring straight-line.
In conclusion, this mod is okay. It is fun when you want to simply go fast, but if you're looking for actual platforming that tests you? The base game is better, all the way.
