LeonardoTheMutant's Murder Mystery
A port of the popular multiplayer game for Sonic Robo Blast 2
Inspired by Murder Mystery in Garry's Mod and variations of it Minecraft
Back in February 2023, I joined a random SRB2 server claiming to host a Murder Mystery game. The owner of that server was showcasing and testing his LUA script, which added a new game type to the game. Back then, it was nothing more than a modified Match game that crashed very often, but I liked the idea. I came to him and said, "Hey, I never touched LUA in my life, but I do some little programming in Python and C, and I like your add-on idea. I would like to help you with it, maybe even do some maps". That's how I got into this project. That guy and I were working on the improvements to that script, but over time, he decided to leave SRB2. I asked him if I could take ownership of the project, and he agreed. The guy I am talking about had changed his name multiple times, but we all remember him as "Tedbasher" or simply "Ted". Without him, this gametype add-on and many other things that were caused by it would never exist.A port of the popular multiplayer game for Sonic Robo Blast 2

What is Murder Mystery all about?
I am sure you all have heard and played Among Us at some time. Murder Mystery is a very close game. In fact, Among Us was based on Murder Mystery. The gameplay of this version of SRB2 MM (some people were doing their own SRB2 MM in parallel) is based on SRB2's Vanilla Ringslinger, so you are going to need some skills from these types of game modes.At the beginning of the round, you are going to get one of the 3 possible roles:
- Murderer - the bad guy. The players with this role have to do everything to kill every player and not get caught. They have only Red Rings and a Knife to their disposal. Players with this role can either go with the, what I like to call, "Fast & Blast (& no mystery)" mode or be true ninjas and leave no trace behind them, making the game even more mysterious.
- Sheriff - the local police in this game. The players with that role have a huge responsibility to find and eliminate the Murderer(s). They have all Weapon Rings available in SRB2 at their disposal, but they should cleverly use them to not kill an Innocent player. If a player with that role dies, it will drop the Sheriff's Emerald (analog of the gun in other MM versions) that Civilians can pick up and take that player's place.
- Civilian (also known as the Innocent) - a regular player. Their primary task is to not get killed by the Murderer. They can also help the Sheriff with the investigation. They don't have any weapons, but they can get them in the middle of the game (This is explained in the next section).
The game manual is included with the add-on and can be accesed anytime by running the
MMHELP
command in the game consoleAbout the gameplay in this version of MM
As said earlier, this version of MM is based around SRB2's Ringslinger. I tried to make a game type that would fit the esthetics of the vanilla SRB2 and don't go much from them, because, in my opinion, Sega and Sonic Team Jr. made a really good base game design.There are Rings and Weapon Ring Panels scattered throughout the maps, which players (with a specific role) can pick up and use as ammunition. These Rings work differently for each role (and that also depends on how the in-game admins will set up the game). For example, Murderers can't use any of the Weapon Rings during normal gameplay (but they still can collect them), while Sheriffs and Heroes can use and shoot with them at all times. For the Civilians, things work differently: They must collect 100 regular Rings (some skins require only 50 Rings per shot) to get a chance to make a Red Ring shot, which, if used correctly, will successfully defend them against a Murderer.
A Civilian player can get an "upgrade" when they pick up the Sheriff's Emerald from the dead Sheriff player. This emerald will give a Hero role that will make them a new Sheriff, but this role has some differences from the regular Sheriff:
- If Hero dies, no Emerald will be dropped for others, which often makes the Murderers automatically win.
- If Hero kills a Civilian (either by accident or thinking it was a Murderer), both he and that player will die as a punishment. (If the Sheriff does the same, he just loses his role and becomes a Civilians.
The maps
Most maps included in the add-on were designed to have many hiding places where players can hide from others. Most of the maps were made entirely by me, and some are remixes of other creations I liked and was inspired by.Abandoned Shelter

Stuff for the game administrators and hosters
MM_ABILITIES
- Enable/Disable abilities applied by a player's skin. When Disabled, all skins have Sonic1-like abilities (spin jump (including Amy & Fang), sneaking (hold SPIN button to walk slower and leave no footmarks)). Enable this Variable to remove the ability limit. The default value is NO;MM_ALLOWINVINC
- Allow/Restrict the usage of the Invincibility powerup. It is recommended to NOT ALLOW this powerup in the game because they can turn the game into chaos. Default value is NO;MM_ALLOWSHIELDS
- Allow/Restrict the usage of the shield powerups. It is recommended to NOT ALLOW these powerups in the game because they can turn the game into chaos and make it unplayable. Default value is NO;MM_ALLOWSHOES
- Allow/Restrict the usage of the Speed Sneakers powerup. Default value is NO;MM_AUTOFIRE
- Enable/Disable autofire for all weapons. The default value is ON.MM_CRYPTIC
- Enable/Disable the "Cryptic game" mode, where most of the player counters, teammates list and player nametags are disabled to make the game more cryptic (and feel more like a true mystery)MM_CUSTOMSKINS

console variable is disabled. The default value is 20.MM_WEPCFG_MURD
, MM_WEPCFG_SHERI
, MM_WEPCFG_HERO
- Set the Weapon Configuration for Murderers, Sheriffs and Heroes respectively. These CVARs in their value contain two sepparate configurations for Normal Gameplay and for Showdown Duel. The variables accepts the *interger* in 0-15 range. There is a graphical explanation of these CVARs included inside the root directory of the PK3 fileMM_WEPCFG_CIVIL
- Enable/Disable weapons for Civilians. When enabled, players need to have 100 rings (some skins require only 50 rings) for each shot/knife usage. There are 3 possible values for this CVAR:0 - Disable weapons for the Civilians entirely;
1 - Allow Knife + Red Ring;
2 - Allow only Knife
The list of all Console Variables is also available in-game by executing the

Console CommandThe game type includes an additional command intended for Dedicated Server Hosts:
SAYDEAD
- send a message to the Chat of Dead as the ServerThe code background of the add-on
I tried to design a game type that would be vanilla-friendly. For example, if you host a multi-gametype game, when you switch from MM to any of the Vanilla gametypes, all global changes made by MM will be reversed to their original vanilla state (there is only one bug where Metal Sonic cannot go into his Dash mode and I have no solution to this) so it would not interfere with the Vanilla game.Because this is my first SRB2-LUA programming experience (and my first "serious" project), some other add-ons may not work with MM. Mainly the add-ons with Custom characters, Custom HUD and Chat modifications.
The code documentation is placed in the GitHub Wiki page of the project's repository, feel free to read it
