most of a year into the Ring Racers experiment, Dr. Robotnik has witnessed the many successes of setting up a few of his badniks to have kart driving functionality; people are less scared of his creations, friendly rivalries are being bolstered, and even the badniks themselves seem happy with it! so, he figures... maybe he could rework a handful more.
Badnikpak is an expansion to Ring Racers' cast to bring in even more badnik racers! this project has been my primary focus for most of the last eight months, and i am so excited to share the spoils of my (and my teammates') labor with everyone. as much as possible, these badniks were made to feel in-line with the basegame's badnik racers, both in adherence to the art style and in the depiction of their character through animations and voice lines.
many of the badniks have audio pulled from outside sources; those sources are mentioned here, but if you'd like links to any of them, check the first post of the discussion thread!
the pack's nine badnik racers are grouped into trios by era:
1991-1992
Yadorin saunters in from Spring Yard Zone! this giant hermit crab has a sweet, curious demeanor that anyone could love.
rivals: Mighty, Caterkiller, Taraban
voice: fm synth i made in furnace tracker
thank you to @mitsame for sending me reference photos of her Yadorin figure ^_^
Taraban crabwalks all the way from Aqua Lake Zone! i hear these things populate Under Ground Zone and Scrambled Egg Zone, too.
Taraban's sprites are colored in a way to allow the basegame's playercolors to split with a good contrast between the two sides; the default custom color it uses maps that coloring to two separate interleaved ramps, which will most likely look awful on other racers. additionally, in the downloads of this post i've included an optional separate pk3 named "tarapalettes" that comes with a handful of extra playercolors designed for use with Taraban's threaded color ramps!
rivals: Motobug, Caterkiller, Yadorin
voice: castanet recordings from freesound users theoriginalcrazydave (gloat), satoration (win, attack1, attack2, boost1, hurt1), plingativator (boost2, hitconfirm), jarredgibb (lose), baledcuram (slow), and compoargentino (hurt2)
thank you to my friend galaxycamerata for suggesting castanets for the voice lines ^_^
Sol rolls in from Hill Top Zone! not to be confused with the Sol hovering about with their ring of fire; this is a different guy.
rivals: Tails, Bomb, Dribbler
voice: various sfx from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992, Mega Drive)
1993
From Palmtree Panic comes Taga-Taga! this one is more at home in Tidal Tempest, but it can leap from waterfalls with the best of them.
rivals: Sonic, Ecco, Kama-Kama
voice: various sfx and musical snippets from Sonic the Hedgehog CD (1993, Mega CD)
thank you to NUKELEDGE for their reconstruction of Tidal Tempest Present (JP) that i trimmed for Taga-Taga's hitconfirm ^_^
Kama-Kama rides in from Collision Chaos! would you believe it was her voice they recorded for the pinball bumpers?
rivals: Amy Rose, Billy Hatcher, Noro-Noro
voice: Collision Chaos bumper sfx pitched by me + 2 sfx from Sonic the Hedgehog CD (1993, Mega CD)
our final guest in from Little Planet, Noro-Noro from Quartz Quadrant! don't get put off by its stare; it doesn't really do facial communication.
rivals: Cream, Gutbuster, Taga-Taga
voice: various vocal samples from industry sample cds, some pitched to match their use in Sonic the Hedgehog CD (1993, Mega CD)'s original soundtrack
thank you to the NEWER VGM Sound Sources spreadsheet for the names of source cds and which tracks had the samples on them ^_^
1994-1995
bounding over from Marble Garden Zone, it's Hopper! he wants everyone to know that he is not a mantis. he's a grasshopper.
rivals: Knuckles, Cluckoid, Penguinator
voice: various vocal samples, sfx, and music stings from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994, Mega Drive), a bit from an american commercial for the same game, and Knuckleduster by Danny Baranowsky
Penguinator slides down from the mountains(?) of Mega IceCap Zone! she's actually quite anxious about heights. and lows. and driving. and snow.
rivals: Bark, Redz, Hopper
voice: various pengo sfx and african penguin honks
thank you to @Sharb for suggesting the idea for Penguinator's joke signpost ^_^
lastly, it's Dribbler, hailing from... Robotnik Coaster? it seems that's the closest place on the form to her actual home of Speed Slider.
rivals: Espio, Gutbuster, Sol
voice: Juice from Slam City with Scottie Pippen (1994, Mega CD/CD32X)
thank you to the Sega Conversion & Analysis Tool for allowing me to rip (most of) the fmvs from Slam City with Scottie Pippen (1994, Mega CD/CD32X)

additionally, Badnikpak comes with three new badnik followers!
- Whisp from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992, Mega Drive), with sound taken from stock cartoon sfx for a nondescript voice coming through a phone speaker
- Amenbo from Sonic the Hedgehog CD (1993, Mega CD), with sound taken from the "get stick bugged lol" meme
- Peppepe from Sonic Labyrinth (1995, Game Gear), with sound taken from a mechanical duck toy in the 1941 Merrie Melodies short "Toy Trouble" starring Sniffles
thank you to my friend jenny for suggesting Peppepe's sound :)
HUGE thank you to Team Lunarbloom's programmer and audio engineer, @amyfarbright! she's responsible for:
- the ideas for Hopper's signpost and Yadorin & Sol's joke signposts
- suggesting Whisp as a follower as well as its sound
- audio engineering work on Taga-Taga, Hopper, Penguinator, and Dribbler's voices
- scripting lua for Sol's death sfx & the flower spawning code for Taga-Taga, Kama-Kama, and Noro-Noro
- and plenty of other small suggestions that helped me figure out personalities for some of the badniks :)
this project would not have been possible without her help. this pack would have been submitted to the mb five or so months ago with 4 racers and no lua had she not given me motivation to draw even more badniks and go even wilder with them.
additional thanks to Team Lunarbloom's promotional artist, @fiffle! she did the design work for this pack's logo; without her background in visual design and wordmarks and her willingness to sketch stuff out, Badnikpak would not have had a logo. she also suggested that Penguinator use sfx from Pengo (1982, Arcade)
as well, thank you to @toaster for helping me grasp Ring Racers' art style and for poking around the flower spawning code and helping amy work past some roadblocks with it ^_^
and lastly, thank you to @VelocitOni for the single frame of Ring Racers' ring animation that i plucked for Dribbler's exploded sprite, and thank you to the artists of SRB2 for the many little animal sprites i pulled for other badniks' exploded sprites.
all graphical work for this pack, with exception to everything credited to others above, was done by me.
