What is SMS’s true base form, in your opinion?

The title seems a bit stupid, but here’s the context: I was watching this X Sonic showcase video, among many, and one comment struck me. “X Sonic is base form SMS.” Now, of course, most Sonic’s can become SMS, so this statement is of course accurate. Now, in my opinion, the commenter was referring to utility. By that, I mean SMS’s utility is as overpowered as a super X Sonic could be, which is false with normal Super X Sonic of course, but their power levels kinda scale. That’s how I read it at least. But then, I dug deeper, probably more than was ever remotely needed, and I realized it fits in more ways than just this. First, in spectacle, they match. X Sonic can get the same wonder as SMS, at least scaled down. SMS was made to be the Sonic in cinematics, intros, and shows in terms of spectacle and power, and X Sonic is similar, as it tries to capture Sonic from Sonic X’s power, and both succeed, and also match. That’s the main connection I made, and I’d like to know what other people think about this little issue. Also, since SMS is more or less based off Adventure Sonic, and so is X Sonic, they match in visuals too. So, let me know your thoughts on this little question!

I'd say it's just Sonic in general. Even back in the final demo days, an entire custom exe was made to pair with an smsunleashed.wad which gave him the ability to boost in an attempt to replicate the rush you get when playing Unleashed's daytime stages. Rather than it being any one specific version of Sonic, it's always come off to me more like it's just meant to be a hypothetical super form that could act as an extension of really any base Sonic from any time point or franchise provided he meets the requirements to attain it, which would also explain why it's coded to pair with most characters named "Sonic" in SRB2.
