Eternity in an hour
Recently SEGA has been starting to take the lore of the franchise more seriously, but they also don't seem to have opted to retcon anything from Forces, with Tails's mental breakdown from that game getting referenced in Frontiers. As such, the safest bet right now is to assume that everything in Forces is canon, which comes with one particular term that's used to describe Classic Sonic: "The Sonic from another dimension".
This description is never used to describe him in Sonic Generations. All of the context in that game is that it's Sonic's own past self, a detail that doesn't get retconned in Sonic X Shadow Generations. As such, we are somehow left with a situation in which Classic Sonic in Generations and Forces is simultaneously Sonic's past self and a Sonic from a different dimension. I've put a lot of thought into this matter, and I think I've figured out a way for both of these things to be true without any contradictions to the official Sonic timeline.
The theory is this: Classic Sonic in Generations, Mania, Forces, and Superstars is actually the Sonic from the original (Sonic 06) timeline. This is the Sonic that eventually goes on to undergo the adventure from Sonic 06 and blow out the flame that would have become Solaris, creating the Modern timeline. The two timelines end up being very similar, but also have some noteworthy differences.
Original timeline: Sonic 1 > Sonic CD > Sonic 2 > Sonic 3&K > Chaotix > Sonic 3D > Sonic Generations (Classic Sonic's perspective) > Sonic Mania > Sonic Forces (Classic Sonic's perspective) > Sonic Superstars > Sonic Adventure > Sonic Advance > Sonic Adventure 2 > Sonic Advance 2 > Sonic Heroes > Sonic Battle > Sonic Advance 3 > Shadow the Hedgehog > Sonic 06
Modern Timeline: Sonic 1 > Sonic CD > Sonic 2 > Sonic 3&K > Chaotix > Sonic 3D > Sonic 4 > Sonic Adventure > Sonic Advance > Sonic Adventure 2 > Sonic Advance 2 > Sonic Heroes > Sonic Battle > Sonic Advance 3 > Shadow the Hedgehog > Sonic Rush > Sonic Rivals > Sonic Rivals 2 > Sonic Riders > Sonic and the Secret Rings > Sonic Rush Adventure > Sonic Riders Zero Gravity > Sonic Unleashed > Sonic and the Black Knight > Sonic Free Riders > Sonic Colors > Sonic Generations (Modern Sonic's perspective) > Sonic Lost World > Sonic Forces (Modern Sonic's perspective) > Team Sonic Racing > Sonic IDW starts > Sonic Frontiers > The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog > Sonic Dream Team > Sonic Racing Crossworlds > And so forth...
This timeline placement not only causes Classic Sonic to make more sense in Generations and Forces, but it also explains why nobody in Forces seems to remember the Phantom Ruby, as the Modern Timeline cast would have never encountered it before Forces. Because the original timeline is parallel to the modern timeline while also creating it, the two could be said to be different dimensions from each other, but Sonic also retains his memories after blowing out the flame in Sonic 06's ending, which makes this version of him Modern Sonic's past self.
