My first character

Hi, I've been lurking her for about 1 to two years and I figured I could show my progress on my first character. It's an original character of mine.

I would love to hear some feedback and maybe some advice about shading, I'm still practicing with stuff like shading so some tips would be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming the scarf is supposed to be recolourable (seeing as it's green)? If that's the case, then you might need to change the colours on the minimap icon. As it is now, changing colours won't affect it.

I'd also recommend cropping the signpost. Having parts of the character pop out of the sign's borders is generally the normal thing to do, but the tail seems to exist entirely outside the sign. If I were you I would get rid of the tail and trim down the bit of the main body that's leaking out from the left.

The brown of his fur is what I plan to make green, though I suppose I should add the scarf to the colorable region.

Isn't this the exact same post as this post here?
That is actually my brother.

In that case, I advise you change the startcolor variable in your character's properties.txt file to something else, then change everything you plan on being recolourable (including the kart) to that colour. The wiki recommends changing this to either 32, 48, 144 or 224 so the recolourable ramp doesn't bleed into other ramps on the palette.
