I don’t think you’re supposed to be able to save Grand Prix games you lost, it’s probably a code leftover
Your best bet is to just screen record your Grand Prix games as your playing them

Tested on Manual Save and Auto Save.
Manual Save fails if you get TRY AGAIN but succeeds if you get GAME OVER (but no race result data is recorded). From the log:

Auto Save succeeds regardless of result (but no race result data is recorded if you get TRY AGAIN or GAME OVER). Replays seemingly save after using a continue (from the log):
This is likely a bug, since replay saving fails only when you try to manually save a replay after you get TRY AGAIN (lost race, but still have lives left), but not GAME OVER (lost race with no lives left).
