Difficulty with skins

I downloaded a couple of character WADs that don't show up on the character select screen when I put them in. Is there a console command to switch the skin while playing, and, if not, how can I fix this?

They're multiplayer wads. You can use them in single player by either making a soc, or using devmode and the skin command.

Could you show me exactly what I would type in the console to use them in single player?

Option A:

DEVMODE
SKIN <insert skinname here>

Option B: Make a SOC,

ADDFILE <SOC FILENAME HERE>
