Did Mephiles deserve to be erased from existence?

I was bored browsing the internet when I randomly came across the official guide for Sonic 2006. Something I found interesting is that it literally says Solaris and by extension, Mephiles went insane because of the Duke of Soleanna's experiments. This made me wonder: did Mephiles truly deserve to be erased from the timeline, like what happened in Shadow Generations, or did he deserve another chance, even though he probably would have wasted it?

I mention this because I've seen people arguing about this topic in some videos on youtube and twiter (I won't call it x and you can't make me).
