I have seen this bug in some YouTube videos, so I might as well make a summary as to why Lap Bonus does not work as one should expect. As a general rule:
Also, another bug with "player losing" because that also affects Lap Bonus:
(BUG: Bonus Rounds in multiplayer requires the player to survive and place in the top-half to actually get an extra life on a Perfect run)
- Leading a lap should award 2 points. (In DUEL mode, this awards 1 point instead.)
- Finishing a lap in the top-half without leading it should award 1 point.
- Finishing a lap in the bottom-half should award no points.
- If player wins or is tied in both lap count and distance to finish: Player is ahead (Correct)
- If player loses in lap count (regardless of distance to finish): Player is behind (Correct)
- If player is tied in lap count but loses in distance to finish: Player is behind (Correct)
- If player wins in lap count but loses in distance to finish: Player is behind (INCORRECT)
- If the player's time is faster than the opponent: Player is ahead (Correct)
- If the player's time is slower than an opponent who has also finished: Player is behind (Correct)
- If the player's time is slower than an opponent still racing or has retired: Player is behind (INCORRECT)
In Lost Colony, if a player dies and respawns in the elevator section, their distance to finish may reset to zero.
During that time, any opponent in a later lap will be one place lower than they should be (they will win in laps completed, but lose in distance to finish). Notice that even with the distance to finish at zero, it still insists triggering the "big waypoint gap" state and a "Press (Y) to respawn" message as seen here.

If a player connects to a multiplayer server and joins the same race without another map change occurring, they are considered GAME OVER'd in the "check racers" and "eliminate last" checks. This can cause the race to end abruptly or for eliminate last to fire on someone else with that player still racing. If the player finishes after "eliminate last" takes effect, they will be placed 16th instead of 15th in a 16-player race (this is due to the time of the opponent who has DNF'd being faster than the player).
Also, another bug with "player losing" because that also affects Lap Bonus:
- If player finishes 4th in a 16-player race when less than 10 players tie for last: Finish OK, +1 lap point (Correct)
- If player finishes 4th in a 6-player race: Lose, no lap bonus (Correct)
- If player finishes 4th in a 16-player race when 11 players tie for last: Lose, no lap bonus (INCORRECT)
