So, you want to take assets from the game you're modding to make something new from it.
You may be aware of the Open Asset rule for addons, it works well due to individual artists (usually) owning the entirety of their addon. However SRB2, Ring Racers, and SRB2Kart have a lot of small parts made by many people so it can be a bit more complicated to know which assets you can safely modify for your own addons.

This post will tell you exactly what aspects of the three mentioned games that you can extract, modify, and use with or without needing to contact the SRB2 or Kart Krew Devs.

Please be aware that assets don't need to be Open to be used in maps, in many doom engine games you're able to call textures loaded in the base iWAD of the game you're modding.
The same applies to STJR/KK's games. Simply using provided textures that are assumed to always be loaded is always allowed. The Open and Closed Assets rules are only to control the editing and cross-game use of said assets.

Also please be aware that patching data over existing data is allowed! However the Submission Guidelines do have a rule stating that you must be honest about what your addon does. Any P_SKIN lumps or writing over existing Textures/Sprites should be stated in the addon's overview!

SRB2:
  • Open for use: Maps, Textures, Graphics, Sprites, Music, Characters. You can edit and use these as much as you'd like.
  • Closed and cannot be used without permission: Models. Currently the base game models are closed assets.

Ring Racers:
  • You may remix the original sound track made for Ring Racers so long as you credit the original composer.
    • Don't forget to add credits into the MUSICDEF if you decide to use it for an addon!
    • Refer to the Ring Racers section of the Submission Guidelines for more information!
  • Editing (outside of music remixes) for any of the original music or sounds requires permission from Kart Krew.
  • If you wish to make edits to any textures for your own maps, you need to contact KartKrew for permission.
    • Using duplicate visually-identical textures and applying different TERRAIN effects to them is very much discouraged. It would be confusing to players if a texture used for off-road in vanilla maps is suddenly used for road in your own map.
      • The exception to this is solid color textures.
  • Editing the base game maps requires permission from Kart Krew.
  • Editing any Characters requires permission from Kart Krew.
  • Editing any Followers requires permission from Kart Krew.
  • You may use or edit the kart included with Ring Racers' version of kartmaker, so long as it's done within the context of Ring Racers. You should also try to credit VelocitOni who sprited it, but this is optional.
  • Editing any other assets not listed above, such as sprites or models, requires permission from Kart Krew

SRB2Kart:
  • You may remix the original sound track made for SRB2Kart so long as you credit the original composer.
  • Editing (outside of music remixes) for any of the original music or sounds requires permission from Kart Krew.
  • If you wish to make edits to any textures for your own maps, you may do so for your SRB2Kart maps. However this is limited to SRB2Kart only.
    • You cannot use or edit SRB2Kart Textures for other games (Like SRB2 or Ring Racers) without permission from KartKrew.
  • Editing the base game maps requires permission from Kart Krew.
  • Editing any Characters requires permission from Kart Krew.
  • Editing any other assets not listed above, such as sprites or models, requires permission from Kart Krew

Please keep in mind that you can always ask the developers for permission to use any assets that are marked as closed!
(STJR for SRB2, and Kart Krew for Ring Racers and SRB2Kart.)
After you contact any dev member on either team, they'll either point you or forward your message to the appropriate member.
Make sure you only ask a developer in the correct team! Don't ask an SRB2 dev permission for Ring Racers stuff if they aren't in Kart Krew!

You can find Kart Krew's statement on Ring Racers assets below!
