I'll let the .gif explain it.

The left side shows a flat aligning to the sectors in the way you would expect, the right side shows a texture that the engine apparently rotated about 45 degrees relative to the linedef. I'm not sure why, but OpenGL, as of 2.2.6, seems to have different code for textures and flats. The Software engine meanwhile treats both types the same.
