Sprite modding custom characters

(I know this is kind of a dumb question but, I just need make sure) If you wanted to make a sprite mod for a custom character in releases, would you have to ask the original uploader first? If so, where would be the best place to post it? Ex. Miscellaneous in releases, Editing​

It would probably be best to either send the original creator a Personal Message, showing them what you have to offer, or post it in the add-on's release thread. If they accept, they can implement it and give you credit on the download page for your contribution.
