Question for any character mod creators!

Just a question for any character mod creators out there, when making a character, what takes the most amount of time?

Just wanted a little bit of insight for character modding, that's all.

I don’t think anyone would argue if I said that the sprites part is the most time consuming one. For example you have a SINGLE frame of animation, like standing for example (which isn’t an animation at all but ye...)

So for that you need to make 5 seperate sprites if your character is symmetrical, because then the angle sprites can be simply flipped, but if it’s not, then you need to make 8 seperate sprites... and all of that only for a single frame of animation...

So anyway, that’s also the reason why walk cycles haunt all spriters in this community... ;v;

Sprites will also take differing amounts of time depending on how detailed the character is. Bare minimum simplicity will still be time consuming, but with more detail comes more time spent on each individual sprite, which keep in mind each frame of animation has to be tackled from 8 directions for asymmetrical characters. That's going to quickly add up.

Generally, I'd suggest anyone creating such a character mod to just take their time and make it a personal passion project rather than striving to release it quickly, not only to help ensure quality but also for the sake of their own sanity. It might also help to keep such projects unannounced for the majority of their dev time, as this way you won't feel pressured to deliver on any hype that would be generated from an announcement. Feeling pressured to deliver onto expectations can easily become overwhelming, and I'd speculate is likely a large contributor to projects getting canceled or falling into dev hell with minimal progress due to burnout.

Of course, if you're comfortable with an early announcement then that's your own choice to make, just be aware of the scope of what you're doing and have a plan in place to remain committed to a healthy work schedule that won't result in burnout. You're probably not getting paid for it either, so you'll have to fit it into your free time which is another thing to take into consideration before starting such a project. Having the freedom of not feeling pressured to deliver onto expectations could allow for a slower schedule that allows for more free time spent on other things, or you could just have to accept that you're going to need to remind people to be patient from time to time.

Nick WolfFang dev here, I released my character like 2 weeks ago. Overall my character took 1 year to complete it. I have some of free time but not that much. I also received collaboration from various members who decided to assist a bit when Nick was a public beta in specific communities.

I ask some tips from them but I try to carry out my project myself (coding, spriting, abilities planning, etc). If I can't do something, I'll ask being aware that they can say "no", or "can't". I'm not a beggar.

I took most of the time is the Spriting part. Doing my effort to match srb2's spriting style. And not only that, you need to apply art techniques, kind of perspective, smear frames, etc. everything that involves animation in general. Might take less time depending of the sprites details like Anti Aliasing, Shading, etc. these things isn't that much necessary to fit in srb2 actually, I've seen spriters that uses less of these details and fit's good enough in SRB2.

Nick was not my top priority project to do when developing him. I collaborate for other current projects like Zombie Escape 2, Epic! Murder Mystery, and a bit for Pizza Time Spice Runners since I like those and I felt to help, all of them are w.i.p custom gamemodes. apart from that I learn about other things like 3d modeling for srb2 stuff.

Basically my character is the last thing I wanted to do. If I have the motivation to continue him, I do.

As time gear said, take your time and don't rush it basically.

Amperbee did a thread about things to consider about character mod making.

Should probably mention that I don't actually plan on making a character for this game.
yet (maybe) (idk)

Either way, thank you for all the responses so far!
