Venturing into 3D models! Presently, these are all for my own pack, https://mb.srb2.org/addons/c-k-s-mecha-koopa-pack.6733/
In your Ring Racers folder, there is a folder called Models, in which there are several more folders with abbreviated names. Inside the zip folder of this download, there is a folder called CKOP. Place this folder - not just its contents, but the folder itself - in this Models folder, along with the similarly named basegame ones.
The zip file also contains "addtomodels.txt". In this txt file is a few lines of text that needs to be added to "models.dat", a file in the Ring Racers folder. You should be able to just double-click it to open it like a .txt file, but if that doesn't work, temporarily rename the .dat into .txt and then do it. Copy-paste the contents of the text file into models.dat - anywhere will do, but since you shouldn't need to touch the basegame ones, I recommend putting modded stuff at the very top. Save the file, and change it back to .dat if you need.
To actually turn on 3D models, go to video settings in-game. Go to Advanced, then Rendering Backend, and switch from Software to LegacyGL. This adds a new menu, in which you can simply turn 3D models from off to on. This is not a committal change, as you can switch back and forth anytime you can access this menu, so feel free to try it out!

CREDITS TO: fznmeatpopsicle for creating the 3D model template! It's on the Kart Krew discord, so I can't directly link it here, but it was tremendously useful
Togen for creating Simpler AnimaL, which isn't part of this download because it's just the models, but it is in my character mod and allows for the models to have custom trick animations
