Sonic Colors!

Kids = Money
Money = Success

Businesses don't have to care, they can just rake in money.
And remember, this isn't the only Sonic game. This is a Wii exclusive and a new Sonic game will probably be announced soon.
Teens = Jobs = More money = More success. Trufax.

And yeah, I know that, but then they're technically clustereffing new games together, making them seem like rush jobs and less appealing.

EDIT: Then again. Parents = Higher paying jobs, so if that's what you meant, my "trufax" is invalidated. :u

The way I see it (and the way I see it is a very narrow and perhaps uninformed view, mind you), SEGA doesn't really know what the hell to do with Sonic franchinse anymore because they're constantly trying to appease all the fractured groups of its dedicated fanbase (the lingering retrofags, the youngin's who must continuously be courted for fresh blood to keep the franchise alive, ect) with seperate games. I can only suppose this is how stuff like Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 4, and the supposedly excessively kid-friendly Sonic Colours come about.

The thing is, some of the best platformers don't give an apparent damn about intended demographics: Super Mario Galaxy has both literal flying pastries over neon-blue skies and friggin' huge space fortresses with blazing guns aplenty. Yoshi's Island, Rayman, and the Megaman games seem fairly kiddish at first but have wicked difficulty curves that older gamers can appreciate.

But the thing about all the aforementioned examples is that they all possess very accessible gameplay, with limited regard to gamers' maturity or current level of skill. In doing so, such games increase their audience, their sales, and the profits derived from them. I'm no analyst in electronic media marketing, but I fail to see how catering to select audiences for specific games, especially for a franchise as well known as Sonic the Hedgehog, is as profitable or efficient as making each game with as much universal appeal as possible.

I think SEGA has an inkling of this mentality. The Advance and Rush series seem to be games that many fans, regardless of age, seem to be at least familiar with. And I'd say Sonic Unleashed fits in fairly well into the above examples of games with colorful aesthetics and challenging difficulty. So why not continue in that vein?

Granted, I've already over-analyzed Sonic Colours based on practically no evidence (the vague "the promotional trailer looks really colorful and kiddy!" description I keep getting from those who have seen it, and the uncomfirmed name "Sweet Mountain", to be precise). Perhaps the kiddy nature of the game will largely restricted to design choice and the gameplay will be able to be appreciated by all. As I've said before, the Mario franchise in particular pulls off that trick with astounding success all the time.

Honestly, I'm a little disappointed in everyone who's so upset with the way the art design in this is going. I mean, as long as the gameplay isn't made worse to pander to whatever audience Sega is going for, I don't really care how 'kiddy' it is. I'd rather have that than yet another 'edgy' Sonic game that's trying to be 'mature' and ends up sounding more like a bad fanfiction.

Also, the fact that there's a level made of hamburgers and Jello makes me really, really happy. See, Sonic's world has always been meant to be a little surreal, and to be honest, the less focus on realism and the more work they put into making fun, memorable levels, the better. I've always wanted to see more levels made with food since I played Earthworm Jim 2.

On the idea of Sonic before for more mature audiences than Mario, to be honest, from a teenage perspective, you're far more likely to be laughed at for playing a Sonic game than a Mario game, because the ones that actually try to be 'hip and with the kids' generally fail miserably at it.

Cue, you're totally right.

I do get laughed at from time to time about Sonic. "Who plays Sonic at the age 13? Bwa ha ha!"

Some higher quality/ bigger scans are available now in case any of you are interested.
Nintendo Power appears to be very amused.

I must say the levels look quite good; much better than they did in Sonic Unwiished. Only complaint is how the Drill Power-Up kills you if you run out of time while underground, would've preferred if it just forced you to the surface and you lost some rings.

Has anyone posted this yet?

The Sonic Cycle's turned from getting hopes up for following games to:

>New game is announced
>No matter how little or how much info is released, almost everyone bitches constantly
>On release, people still buy the game in droves
>Bitchers are seperated into two camps - haters and 'meh'-ers
>Rinse and Repeat

Nintendo Power also had a interview with Iizuka, but since the pictures we have so far are pretty terrible in quality (readable, but still...), I won't post them. I will give you the highlights though.

Iizuka calls Eggman, Robotnik, and he pretty much admits that the Werehog was a bad idea. Otherwise it's your happy "I think this game will be fantastical" and other stuff.

EDIT: Some parts of what I've already posted were cut out, one fo the main things to note is this:

Also apparently Eggman does some sort of commentary when going through one of the levels. I hope he actually has something interesting to say; kinda like the Joker in Batman: Arkham Asylum.

*EDIT*: Eh, I think I'll feel better when I give credit to the guy who got these wonderful scans for us. So all credit goes to Hero of Legend at the Sonic Stadium for them.

I honestly don't have one negative thing to say about this game.

Rails were only used once in SUWii..... And that is because they made a direct port of the last level.

I doubt it'll have too much rails.
Edit: Oh yeah, The Wii had some rails. But not too much. It usually was just one long rail that got you from one place to another. (More forward into the plane, a platform, shortcut, etc)

I might actually buy this game, it is looking like an improvement of how Sonic Unleashed played; did not bother buying Unleashed after seeing the gameplay video that was shown to hype the game and after going back to see the difference between the 360/PS3 version and the Wii/PS2 verison.

And I agree, I hope the rails do not dominate a lot of the stage like in Unleashed, it looked boring and repetitive.

All the rails were made so that little kids would go "omg loek at sonik going down a rial form 2d to 3d omg".

It really was boring.

That is...odd...at first I thought you didn't see the first page and saw the trailer...but this...was, odd? I wonder how they got the text so right, but the video was made in '08?
