It's not broken, you just need the new srb2.srb. Which we aren't going to get until 1.09.4

Runtime error '53'...

You have to tell the SOC Editor to use the /src/ file in your source folder. Otherwise it won't work. Also, you'd be best to use a SVN client and Checkout or Update to the latest version of the SRB2 code.

The gamedata has nothing to do with the SOC Editor. It's the source code you're using.

Well, SOCedit's thing editor works fine with the 1.09.2 source code, and state editing is pretty easy to do manually. (I remember back when I first started SOC editing I completely forgot about SOCedit and state edited manually.)
