'cus some people like to use sprites rather than models, and doing that would mean that character wads would need both.

A better solution would be a forcesprites boolean which, if true, forces sprites in OpenGL regardless of a model present.
 
Turning gr_md2 on automatically forces models, if they exist. Turning it off turns off all models and goes back to using just sprites.
 
While I didn't say this on the board, I did say in #srb2fun that if it wasn't May, it definitely wouldn't be later than June.
