Coming back to SRB2 after a decade-- what to expect?

AnnieLHRDT

Straight outta 2010.
Hey, everyone. I used to play SRB2 quite a lot back in mid-to-late 2010/early 2011, as a young girl.

As you can expect from the title, however, I eventually moved on to other things and haven't touched the game ever since. A few weeks ago I was reminded of it and thought it was the perfect time to come back, specially while having my sister to play with me. I imagine there's been A LOT of changes over the past 12 years, so I'm going to lay down a few questions I hope this great community can help me with.

  1. What are the most important changes, major additions and overall updates since 2.0.6?
  2. How's mod compatibility? I remember quite a few great .wads back in the day, such as Sonic Adventure 2 being recreated within SRB2. Do old mods still work? Any must have .wads for today?
  3. What's up with SRB2 Kart?
  4. I think I've heard about 3D models somewhere. Is that official or a mod?
Thanks! I appreciate any reply in advance. Looking forward to enjoying SRB2 once more.

1. literally everything got changed from music to sprites to even how the game plays in some parts, theres simply too many to list here. Just know that your jaw will probably drop to the floor once you see it all.
2. Old mods don't work anymore because of how much the game has changed, very few mods from 2.0 have been ported unfortunately. I can't really say what's a must have mod, it really depends on what you want to do, because theres so many mods for so many different purposes
3. SRB2 kart is a fangame of SRB2 that's just a advanced harder version of mario kart.
4. Both! 3d models come packaged with the game on OPENGL if you select them as on, but modded models are also something you can add to the game!

Hi! I've actually made a whole series of videos about the changes SRB2 went through over the years. I first played SRB2 right about when you left.

1. The game uses the same engine as in 2003, but has otherwise gotten a complete face-lift. The sprites are all different, the textures and OST have been remade, and nearly every level has been remade. Slopes are now a big part of level design, but other improvements to the engine mean levels can do things that were only dreamed of in 2011. The Special Stages and final boss are also totally different from when you left. Make sure you get those Chaos Emeralds!

2011 was the Version 2.0 era. Currently, we are in the Version 2.2 era. No totally new singleplayer zones have been added since you left, but Arid Canyon Zone has received two new acts and Egg Rock Zone has been split in two. And like I said, nearly every level has been remade.

There are now three new playable characters: Amy, Fang, and Metal Sonic. They all need to be unlocked though.

2. Mod compatibility is a no-go. Mods from 2.0 don't work in 2.1, nor do 2.1 mods work in 2.2. Everyone started from scratch when 2.2 launched in late 2019. Must-have mods include Modern Sonic, Adventure Sonic, Pointy Sonic (there's a lot of Sonics), Stephchars, XMomentum, Milne, Dirk, and Shadow.

Mystic Realm, which was a very popular level pack in 2011, is still around but is now developed by a community instead of one developer. The former developer, Mystic, has since been banned from the community due to drama of their own creation. The current version is called Mystic Realm: Community Edition.

3. SRB2 Kart is a source code mod of SRB2. It's a Mario Kart-based game using the SRB2 engine. It has its own executable and community, as well as a sequel on the way.

4. 3D models are included with the base game if you use OpenGL mode and enable 3D models in OpenGL settings. However, custom 3D models are available on this Message Board.

Oh, you are definitely gonna enjoy 2.2! I wasn't around your era, but the game is insanely updated now. That SA2 (as far as I'm concerned) mod is in 2.2 for you to play! I highly check out addons and more for all the insanely well-made mods available. 3D Models ARE official, along with mod models for mod chars and vanilla cast! I really hope you enjoy your return here to SRB2! It's gonna be a Blast :))

2. Levels are completely redesigned.
3. Eggmans GFZ battle is changed. But still keeps the laser.
4. Musics are changed.

6. There is now more settings.
7. Sonics thok action speed is lowered a little bit down.
8. Special stages are completely changed, now having to collect orbs instead of rings, and not just run around.
9. More addons are created.
10. Emblems are most simple to find.
11. Sonics thok trail is the same as Sonics rolling sprite.
12. Spindash sprites are added.
13. Different shields now has different sounds.
14. Knuckles has more exclusive paths.
15. The end goal sign is redrawn and the camera locks in place once the player hits them.

18. More bonus stages, including NiGHTS.
19. New characters such as Amy Rose, Fang the Sniper, and Metal Sonic.
20. Tails’ tails actually is a different sprite now.

Those are all of the changes I can think of, you can visit SRB2 Wiki for more info.

It's been a while since I've used the forums, so I'm not sure if there's a way to reply to all of your comments at once. Sorry if the replies are too many! Hopefully a mod can edit my comments, if it needs be. In the mean time, I'll answer each one of you one by one.

Aww, I'll miss the old music. I have 2.0's Greenflower Zone theme living rent free in my mind!

Sucks that the mods are most gone, though, but at the very least the older versions are archived and available for download, right?

Can you hit me up with those videos? Would love to watch them! Sounds like the best way to visualize all the changes.

Looking forward to unlocking the new characters! Hopefully it's no chore? Speaking of new characters, is Super Sonic finally a thing?

I'll definitely have to try SRB2 Kart. I'm a sucker for kart racers. And good to know the 3D models are official. As much as I love the sprites, the Saturn-styled 3D models are my favorite.

Thank you for the warm welcome! Glad to see the SRB2 keeps its tradition of being so friendly and helpful. Thanks to everyone who replied, actually!

Thanks for the quick summary! The game really did get some nice visual and sound overhauls for the past decade. I've installed it yesterday and played for a few minutes, and it definitely looks much crispier than I remember.

Again, thank you all for the replies. There's certainly been some very major changes (as expected, I guess, but you never know). I'm looking forward to checking them all out. Cheers!

Sure! Here you go! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-lcCvX5M9BQrdXD10Pu-Xkp2VbVy8N1R

I'm currently working on a video about the evolution of the game's multiplayer. Would be fun to have you along when I record the Version 2.0 footage, if you'd be down for that.

Super Sonic is indeed a thing, as are Super Knuckles and Super Metal.

Yes, there in srb2's website, you can visit them. However, for people who want to join a server, it is not possible to do that (expect for typing a ip address in, will get you in the server without doing anything else different). Which it's because that the master server has to stay in the current version it's at, which if it doesn't allow you to at all. Then you'll have to get there ip address to join, unless if they want to do. However, the website from this message board's master server is now completely gone. Which means it's now split up into an actual website. If you wanna see how it was changed, then here you go. https://ms.srb2.org/ Kart also has it's own master server website, just like srb2 does. So if you want that too, here you go. https://ms.kartkrew.org/ It's also not named SRB2Kart in it, which it's just there actual name used for when they made this game.

As a veteran player from the Final Demo era myself, even I am often blown away by how far the game has come in retrospect. I never missed any major versions in between, but if I had I can only imagine how mind blown I would be by how much the game has improved with time.

About the invite, I'd be down, I guess. I remember playing the multiplayer like, once or twice, so it'd be an interesting trip down memory lane.

And finally! Took long enough! I remember watching a video back in the day about how to unlock Super Sonic. Aaaand it was just a jumpscare.

Sonic Team Jr. really is talented-- and most importantly, passionate. To work on a fangame for decades and pump out such quality... that's something few devs can accomplish.

EDIT: By the way, anyone knows if there's a way to get some AI working on SRB2 Kart?

There's this mod here, however since the guy who published it is banned from the message board, if you want a more up to date version of the mod you'll need to look elsewhere I'm afraid. Alternatively, you can wait for Dr Robotnik's Ring Racers to come out, which will feature proper racer AI, but I honestly have no clue how close that is to releasing.

Welcome back to the community!
Thank you!

Thanks for the link. That seems to be good enough, for what it's worth. Anything that gives me a kart racer different than Sonic & All-Stars Racing is welcome in my book!
