New player, need help getting mod characters

So I watched a tutorial on how to install mod characters. I follow the steps. But when I open the game and try to select the mod, it tells me the sprites are missing. (btw I have only tried PK3 files because I can't find others)

Make sure the mods you are downloading are for your version of the game.

For example, many 2.1 mods are incompatible with 2.2 due to many reasons.
One of them being the way that modders create characters - Character sprites now utilize a more straightforward way of naming them, causing 2.1 character sprites to have the wrong naming format and 2.2 being unable to read it.
