A Little Rant about Bots.....

Ok, I don't know about you, but these bots that have been signing up lately have really been getting on my nerves. Before, they were kinda harmless, but now, they are advertising worse and worse things. Just this moring, two topics were made, one linking to nude photos of "Britney Spears", and another just containing a huge string of links to porn sites. Not only is it annoying, but its against the rules! I don't think the people who send out these bots understand where they are advertising. This is a forum for discussion of SRB2 and things that relate to it. This is not the place to advertise your porn and penis enlargement pills! Finally, they also don't know who they are advertising to! From what I have seen, most people here are between the ages of 11-21. Surely, the younger members (11-17 yr. olds, me included) aren't going to wanna buy pills that have God-knows-what in them. And also, some people just don't like porn. Besides, you're filling the minds of some of the younger ones with dirty thoughts and images. Think of the children!

P.S.: Funny, about 30 minutes after I posted this topic, a bot just posted.
Luckly, it was for diet pills this time.

P.P.S.: Also, I am fully aware that the bots can't be stopped. At least something is being done. Sooner or latter, some VERY bad material might show up, so I would want to be prepared.

Well... They are bots... so your advise wouldn't change a single thing...

But hell YES THEY ARE ANNOYING!!!

We have very little control over the bots that come here. We delete any bot posts we find, and that's the best we can do right now. I deleted two just now. Also, you can't ban the bots because they keep evading, so it's pointless to do so.

One more reason that this community needs a lot of work.
The community? What does the community have to do with bots?

We seem to have a bot come by every other week. It gets annoying after a while.

...

Wait, never mind this post ever exsisting. Move along, nothing to see here...... (Can I delete this post or not?)

Also, you really don't understand the point of the bots, do you?

They don't care what kind of community this is. They don't care about the rules. They don't care who frequents. They want to advertise their sites and infect you with garbage.

We can at least soften the flow of bots if we do E-mail confirmation.

Do we have that image-letter-generation-confirmation thingy on signup? I've heard some of us talking about it, but I dunno if it was added.

Yes it is. But it's obviously inneffective. There was a topic on this in the PHPBB forums, though...

Bots are stupid. But if you think about it they are serving their purpose even if nobody listens.

Hmm... Yes... Therefore, they're not stupid.
The people who make them are.

They generally trick stupid old people into clicking their links this way. Trust me, this method is effective. I've seen it work on people. Of course, they ignore me when I warn them, saying I'm paranoid and don't know what I'm talking about...

*appears in the shadows* I know how to stop them.

It's a simple thing, we just need to change the entire posting page with different names of the forms, and change the forum $_GET (?f=)to something different...

They work on the wavelength of the usual setup of phpbb forums, they need it to be the default form names etc. If you change them, they lose!

Oh, and it's not just us, it's the sepwich forum (with the same bots!) as well.

Manually? o_O Why would they do that to one of a million game forums of people who aren't stupid enough to fall for it? Are they really that bored or something?
